Chapter Chapter 9 in China’s Trade and Investment in Africa, 2020, pp 211-239 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter analyses the impacts and implications of the rapid economic increase of China for the development outcome of its trading partner states in Africa. Based on an analysis of the changing trade data between China and Africa and with a particular focus on Angola and Rwanda, I argue that these relations have significantly worsen African’s impasse of being caught in China’s debt trap syndrome. For achieving the aims of the study, I focus on the impact China’s trade and investment is having on generation of employment for locals and transferring skills and technology necessary for sustainable development. I used data from credible sources to pragmatically analyse Chinese investment in specific sectors of these countries’ economies to see how many jobs these investments generate for locals and whether China transfers technology for long-term sustainable development in these countries.
