Chapter Chapter 10 in Telling the Truth: China’s Great Leap Forward, Household Registration and the Famine Death Tally, 2021, pp 167-179 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines another two of the most influential writers in the field. One is the Chinese officially sanctioned scholar Jiang Zhenghua, who, supported generously by the authorities, wrote an award-winning paper in which he estimates that the GLF famine toll was something like 17 million. Yang Songlin points out that Jiang has never revealed his calculation process in his mathematical modelling. Yang also criticizes Frank Dikötter for over-generalizing Cao Shuji’s report on less than 20 counties and relying on claimed “insider information” that cannot be confirmed. Yang contends that Dikötter’s dramatic storytelling and narratives cannot justify his conclusion of 45 million famine toll.
