Chapter Chapter 2 in Telling the Truth: China’s Great Leap Forward, Household Registration and the Famine Death Tally, 2021, pp 9-34 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter offers a bird’s view of the existing research findings and issues with the conventional wisdom surrounding the famine toll of the GLF. In light of the arguments made by such authors as Yang Jisheng, Jiang Zhenghua, Wang Weizhi, Ansley Coale, Judith Bannister, Gerard Calot, and Frank Dikötter who have constructed famine toll counts ranging from 17 million to 45 million, Yang Songlin presents calculation results by his collaborated work with Professor Sun Jingxian that suggest a much less famine toll count. This chapter also introduces the terminologies and research method involved in the present study, pointing out that many existing findings are premised on flawed computational methodologies and hence problematic estimations.
