Chapter 25 in Handbook of Technology Application in Tourism in Asia, 2022, pp 533-555 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The smart city concept refers to an environment where technology integrates with the city. Smart cities offer various services to their citizens and find solutions to social problems by using information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the Internet. Considering the intensive use of information in the tourism sector and the dependence of tourism on ICTs, it is unavoidable to use the smart adjective for tourism. Especially in Asia, it has been made great efforts to create a smart tourism agenda. China and South Korea provide substantial funds to enterprises that focus on creating the technological infrastructure that supports smart tourism. Smart apps have aims such as giving advices related to attractions, food, and beverage predicting user needs for citizens and tourists and increasing experiences by providing location-based and customized interactive services. In addition, tourists can share their travel experiences with smart applications, thus helping other tourists in the decision-making process. The aim of the research is to examine smart city applications within the tourism destinations in Asia and to reveal the importance of smart cities in terms of tourism and to make recommendations for destination administrations and destinations.
