Chapter 7 in The Operations of Chinese Infrastructure Multinationals in Africa, 2021, pp 167-240 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract With semi-structured interviews for field work study in Mozambique and South Africa, the chapter draws a comprehensive wide-range picture of performance of Chinese MNEs in infrastructure-related investment and how they work them together as mediator of two development processes. It provides exploratory work based on propositions regarding the internationalisation processes of Chinese infrastructure MNEs and their developmental implications. The first part is country-level view: bilateral needs started the motivation of investment; bargaining process between countries will enhance the future investment; how home and host countries (host countries location-advantage differences) influence the focusing firms. The second part is firm-level view. It compares firms from two perspectives: the comparison of telecommunication and construction (sectors) in different countries, and the influences of ownership structures on the investment of these firms.
