Chapter Chapter 15 in Neoliberalism or Neocollective Rural China, 2024, pp 345-374 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Amidst globalization and urbanization, the proliferation of slums worldwide prompts a reevaluation of urbanization in China. Unlike Western nations, where capitalism thrived in cities, China historically maintained a reciprocal urban-rural dynamic. However, modernization introduced a stark urban-rural divide. “Neo-collective Rural China” emerges as a response, aiming to revive the small-scale peasant economy and restore harmony between urban and rural areas. This chapter explores China’s urbanization trajectory, emphasizing the need for a symbiotic urban-rural relationship to address social crises and global inequalities.
