A chapter in China’s Reform and New Urbanization, 2022, pp 77-97 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Urbanization is an important trend in the socio-economic development of countries in the contemporary world. Driven by the reform and opening up and the development of the market economy, China’s urbanization process has continued to accelerate. China’s urbanization rate has grown from 17.9% in 1978 to 51.27% in 2011. The urban population exceeded the rural population for the first time, reaching 690 million people. In the process of rapid urbanization in China, there has been a unique phenomenon that is ubiquitous—“village in the city”. The village in the city is the product of the urbanization development under China’s urban-rural dual system. The village in the city has become a typical problem gathering place in the process of the unified evolution of the urban-rural dual system in China.
