Chapter Chapter 4 in The Belt and Road Initiative in South–South Cooperation, 2021, pp 151-204 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract As early as 1990, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) defined the concept of human development in the first Human Development Report, shifting development thinking and strategies away from excessive preoccupation with economic growth: “Human development is a process of enlarging people’s choices. The most critical ones are to lead a long and healthy life, to be educated, and to enjoy a decent standard of living. If these essential choices are not available, many other opportunities remain inaccessible” (UNDP, 1990: 10).
