Chapter Chapter 2 in Medtech, 2022, pp 17-47 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter offers a general overview of the development of the global medtech industry since the 1960s on the basis of three major kinds of statistics: foreign trade (via the COMTRADE database), patent applications (via a database of more than 500,000 patents, built by the author) and M&As (via the Thomson One database). The analysis focuses on both the global scale and several national cases (the largest players in this industry), which form the basis for Chaps. 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 (the United States, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, France and China).
