Chapter Chapter 4 in African Special Economic Zones, 2022, pp 85-110 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The relationship between China and Africa is complex, and this Chapter endeavours to unpack the relationship utilising publicly available declarations and commitments. The Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the most recent FOCAC Beijing Action Plan is detailed and evaluated, and the various policies that they illustrate, explained. This helps to provide better understanding on the various ways China and Africa cooperate and support one another in economic, social and an array of development initiatives. The trade between China and that of Africa is related, and statistics on foreign direct investment provided. Some of the more contentious issues around China and Africa are objectively assessed including the ‘Angola-Mode’ resources for infrastructure arrangements, the perception of Chinese financing creating ‘debt-traps’ in lesser developed economies, and China’s non-intervention policy towards Africa. The BRICS Plus association is also considered from the perspective of further supporting China and Africa’s cooperation and influence in global matters.
