Chapter Chapter 13 in The Change of Global Economic Governance and China, 2022, pp 219-235 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The WTO, the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), is the main platform for current international trade governance. Various regional trade systems are an auxiliary form that has been continuously developed based on them. It has long been the basic mission and core goal of global trade governance and the WTO to promote trade liberalization. It has been its most important content and the ever-lasting basic principle to regulate and eliminate trade protectionism. The current international trading system is built on the basis of the basic provisions of the WTO agreement. It has long been the main goal of global trade governance to promote trade and investment liberalization. However, nowadays, it is difficult to achieve this goal by virtue of multilateral trade negotiations, so the G20 will play an increasingly important role in international trade governance.
