Abstract:
Abstract The Republic of India has an important geopolitical position in the world, particularly in South Asia. Historically, administrative system of India is influenced by colonial rule in the British administration. Federalism, introduced by the British colonial rulers, was adopted as the state principle by the leaders of India to ensure provincial autonomy and make the local governance free from central or provincial interference. This chapter overall focuses on the pros and cons of Indian public administration’s evolution. By taking the history of Indian public administration as a tool for analysis, this chapter identifies India’s central, state, and local government structures, functions, and responsibilities and how India’s public personnel system, recent government reforms, and changes affect the governance and bureaucratic system of India.
