Abstract: Abstract This survey of productivity measurement chronicles its history, from antiquity through the twenty-first-century challenges posed by the pandemic depression and climate change. It treats alternative approaches, including index numbers and theory-based analytical approaches. It explores the sources of productivity dispersion and gaps, and the presence of zombie firms and their zombie jobs. It covers two topics rarely encountered in productivity surveys: the role of management in productivity analysis, including how to measure and incorporate it, and how to measure its output; and an expansion of the purview of productivity analysis beyond the market sector, to include the creation of environmental externalities. It concludes with a real-time (mid-2021) survey of the productivity-related aspects of the challenges posed by the pandemic depression and climate change.
