Inequality and Inefficiency
Pranab Bardhan
Chapter 39 in Handbook on Economics of Discrimination and Affirmative Action, 2023, pp 897-903 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we consider several reasons why inequality can have serious inefficiency consequences even from the narrow point of view of economists, belying their traditional dogma of equality-efficiency trade-off. Inequality is thus not just ethically distasteful; it can be economically harmful, even ignoring problems of absolute poverty.
