Chapter Chapter 1 in China’s Reform: History, Logic, and Future, 2022, pp 3-24 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Since the beginning of modern times, plagued by domestic crises and foreign invasions, China has constantly been exploring the question of how to modernize into a strong, wealthy nation in ways that suit its national conditions. Throughout this period, China has undergone four critical turning points: the Opium War in 1840, the 1911 Revolution (Xinhai RevolutionXinhai Revolution), the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, and the beginning of its reform and opening-upReform and opening-up in 1978. It was this last turning point, initiated by Deng XiaopingDeng Xiaoping, that pulled China out of poverty, backwardness, and seclusion. Since then, China has followed a development path in which opening-up is furthered by reform and reform is, in turn, furthered through the nation’s opening-up.
