Abstract:
Abstract The working stress design has long been used in civil engineering (e.g., Barker et al. in Manuals for the design of bridge foundations: shallow foundations, driven piles, retaining walls and abutments, drilled shafts, estimating tolerable movements, and load factor design specifications and commentary. Transportation Research Board, Washington, DC, 1991), in which a FOS used to consider the effect of all uncertainties on the safety of structures.
