Chapter Chapter 2 in Information Retrieval in Bioinformatics, 2022, pp 19-35 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract With the increase in availability of data and computing resources the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen an upsurge in recent years. AI has found broad ranging applicability in technology, banking, finance, sports, entertainment, and scientific research across various disciplines. In this chapter, we give a brief overview of the application of AI in the biological sciences. Starting from the basics of machine learning we go step by step to a brief description of more advanced concepts like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with minimum mathematical detail as possible to make this article accessible to readers without formal mathematical training. Some of the AI techniques used in neuroscience, medical diagnostics, and protein structure decoding are elaborated and some examples are discussed. We also discuss some of the common pitfalls or limiting factors encountered while using AI-based algorithms in various situations. The aim of this chapter is to elucidate these concepts and incite interest among the readers on this cutting-edge domain of AI applications in the biological sciences.
