Chapter Chapter 1 in Adam Smith and Yan Fu: Western Economics in Chinese Perspective, 2022, pp 1-7 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this study is twofold. First, at a static level, I examine how The Wealth of Nations (1776, hereafter WN) was introduced into China at the turn of the twentieth century (1902). The translation was not easy because the Chinese language at that time had insufficient vocabulary to introduce this unknown discipline from a completely different cultural system. Second, in a dynamic socio-economic context, Yan Fu (1854–1921) had this book in mind as a prescription for China's "Wealth and Power". The question is: was WN, a book which advocates laissez-faire, free trade and minimum government, helpful for this peripheral economy?
