Chapter Chapter 8 in Technology Application in Aviation, Tourism and Hospitality, 2023, pp 101-111 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The growth of the tourism sector in Spain has been constant from the 1960s to the present day at a much higher rate than any other European country and it has only been slightly affected by some specific moments related to the financial crisis of 2008 or the pandemic derived from COVID-19. Tourism has meant many advances in macroeconomic terms for Spain and also some problems related to the environmental impact or the flow of people that have left some rural areas depopulated. In this article, we intend to extol the situation and the importance of rural tourism for Spain and also to talk about how the technological advances of the last decades are totally applicable to this type of tourism and they can help the country to increase and diversify its tourist offer in the short term. In addition, the correct application of technology can help to generate employment at all levels of the supply chain and it should be seen as a generator of sustainable opportunities which can allow Spain to remain a leader in terms of the number of visitors but from the point of view of the conservation and the care of the natural environment.
