Chapter Chapter 9 in Sustainability Analytics Toolkit for Practitioners, 2023, pp 151-204 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores a wide range of sustainability issues confronting the world today through an analytics angle, in particular what frameworks or tools exist within each of the subject areas, how it concerns other entities, what to measure and how to measure them. The different tools and frameworks to analyse sustainability issues across the environmental, social and governance (ESG) pillars ranges across different levels of sophistication. A noticeable trend is that many of these tools seem to be moving towards more quantitative measures, for example, in measuring social impact, the SROI tools have been developed to quantify the amount of return from investment. Concepts such as natural capital accounting are becoming more prevalent among entities as they seek to measure the value created or loss on accounting books. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that the qualitative aspects or the story of value creation is still as important in helping to promote understanding on sustainability issues, and provide better context and explanation on why and how (the process) certain decisions are made.
