Abstract: Abstract This section surveys the Edo period’s rapidly expanding economy that had two markets: the intra-Han within feudal domains and inter-Han market across feudal domains. It then focuses on the period’s three founders of innovative business practices: Zen’emon Konoike, Takatoshi Mitsui, and Genzaemon Nakai.
