The I/O Model

Lourdesamy Iruthayasamy ()

Chapter Chapter 3 in Understanding Business Strategy, 2021, pp 47-61 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses and evaluates the I/O model to strategy formulation. It essentially evaluates Porter’s competitive strategy. Porter, with his emphasis on industry structure and the Five Forces, provides the best known model to strategy formulation. This chapter is a critical review of Porter’s approach to strategy formulation. The strength and weakness of Porter’s model are analysed. Porter is examined in the context of cross-cultural business operations and values. A significant feature of the chapter is the cross-cultural analysis of strategy, which exposes the limitations of Porter. Finally, the chapter offers a comparison with Kenichi Ohmae’s strategic mind.
