A chapter in Australian Steel in a Globalised World, 2025, pp 1-8 from Springer
Abstract:
AbstractIn the mid-twentieth century, the steel industry in Australia supported a thriving manufacturing sector, but from the 1970s, manufacturing waned while mineral exports surged. This shift led to reduced steel demand and production, reflecting global trends but amplified in Australia by its booming mining sector. The rise and decline of the Australian steel industry, once central to national industrial development and dominated by BHP, is introduced in this first chapter.
