A chapter in Australian Steel in a Globalised World, 2025, pp 113-136 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Australian steel industry faced declining competitiveness due to low investment and global recession pressures. Workforce cuts followed, severely impacting steel communities. The 1983 Hawke Government introduced the Steel Industry Plan to improve efficiency through cooperation between government, unions, and industry. Though temporary, the plan helped revive the industry, setting the stage for its relative success in the 1990s and 2000s.
