A chapter in Australian Steel in a Globalised World, 2025, pp 155-175 from Springer
Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the challenges faced by the industry in the twenty-first century. The 1990s and 2000s brought renewed strength through technological upgrades, workforce restructuring, and increased exports, with key developments including the closure of Newcastle steelworks and BHP’s exit from steelmaking. Despite these improvements the Global Financial Crisis, the rise of the Chinese steel industry, and the need to reduce carbon emissions all created difficulties for the Australian steel industry.
