Chapter 10 in Fundamentals of Managing Risk and Insurance, 2026, pp 195-218 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Effective management of premiums collected by insurers is critical to ensure that promised benefits are duly paid to policyholders. Claims management represents a central component of the insurance business, as the sustainability and reputation of an insurance company are closely linked to the efficiency and accuracy of its claims handling processes. This chapter examines the various avenues available to insurers for investing collected premiums and provides a detailed analysis of claims management. It explores the causes of delays in claim settlements, considering the roles of the insured, the insurer, and third-party actors, and identifies the factors that hinder third parties from performing their functions efficiently. The chapter further introduces the processes of liability determination and claims procedure. Finally, it outlines practical measures insurers can adopt to minimise delays, strategies to motivate third parties to expedite their responsibilities, and approaches for delivering high-quality service to policyholders.
