Chapter Chapter 8 in High-Speed Rail, 2026, pp 151-176 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter analyzes the spatiotemporal effects of HSR on tourism revenue in Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2008 to 2023. We evaluate the impact of HSR operation (dummy variable), accessibility, and connectivity on tourism revenue using a Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model. The findings indicate considerable regional and temporal variability in these effects. The eastern regions derive greater advantages from the early operation of HSR and enhancements in accessibility, whereas the central and western regions depend on connectivity upgrades for tourism integration. Variations are seen among city scales and significant urban agglomerations, indicating differing developmental trajectories and stages of network maturation. The paper highlights the significance of spatiotemporal analysis in assessing infrastructure impacts and provides customized policy recommendations to optimize the economic advantages of HSR tourism.
