Abstract:
Abstract Land rent is an ancient and persistent economic form in China, closely intertwined with other long-standing economic relations. Throughout Chinese economic history, land has been treated as a fundamental issue, and the form of land rent is therefore central to understanding broader economic phenomena. Elsewhere I have discussed the links between landownership and commercial and usury capital, and between land rent, commercial profit, and interest. Here I turn to land rent itself as the most concrete expression of land relations and outline its major patterns and characteristics in China.
