Abstract: Abstract Since the advent of modern capitalism, China’s traditional economic forms have undergone major transformations—some rapid, some gradual—and the manifestations of crisis have changed accordingly. Yet a comprehensive view suggests that the inevitability, regularity, and universality typical of capitalist crises have not fully emerged from the internal development of China’s own economic organization. At the same time, the older cyclical pattern that once characterized China’s feudal economy has been disrupted and distorted by the expansion of market relations, producing crisis outcomes that often run counter to conventional expectations. This section therefore outlines the main manifestations of modern economic crises in China and prepares the ground for identifying their underlying causes.
