Chapter Chapter 7 in Smart Supply Chain Management, 2025, pp 119-134 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Conventional supply chains struggle with inefficiencies, lack of real-time information, and poor visibility, leading to significant operational disruptions. These challenges have become apparent with the increasing complexity and unpredictability of global markets. Emerging digital technologies present a transformative opportunity to address these issues by enhancing decision-making, improving visibility, and increasing overall efficiency. This chapter aims to explore the critical role of knowledge management capabilities (KMCs) in developing smart supply chains. Specifically, it investigates how KMCs can support the integration of advanced digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT), to create more resilient, responsive, and efficient supply chains. To achieve these objectives, the chapter adopts a comprehensive methodology that includes a literature review of relevant studies from 2001 to 2022. This review examines the recurring themes and the transformative potential of selected disruptive technologies (DTs) within supply chain management. By analyzing these studies, the chapter provides a detailed overview of how KMCs and DTs intersect to enhance smart supply chain capabilities. The findings reveal that KMCs play a pivotal role in supporting smart supply chains by facilitating real-time data sharing, improving decision-making processes, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The integration of AI, IoT, and blockchain technologies significantly enhances supply chain operations by providing better data accuracy, increased transparency, and automation of routine tasks. These technologies collectively contribute to reducing costs, improving efficiency, and mitigating risks associated with supply chain disruptions. This chapter contributes to the body of knowledge on smart supply chain management by offering a detailed analysis of the role of KMCs in leveraging digital technologies. It provides valuable insights for practitioners and researchers on the importance of integrating KMCs with DTs to develop more effective supply chain strategies. Furthermore, the chapter identifies gaps in the existing literature and suggests areas for future research to continue advancing the field of smart supply chain management.
