Econometric Analysis of the Impact on Life Satisfaction in Japan Before and After the Outbreak of COVID-19

Abstract: Abstract This chapter quantitatively analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on life satisfaction and “material and spiritual wealth” using surveys conducted in Kyoto City and across Japan. A time-series analysis explored the relationship between economic growth, life satisfaction, and “material and spiritual wealth” from macro and micro perspectives, based on the Public Opinion Survey by Japan’s Cabinet Office. Results showed that life satisfaction declined nationwide and in Kyoto after COVID-19. Before the outbreak, as observed in the 1972–2016 series, people prioritized “spiritual wealth” over “material wealth” when real disposable income (PPP) exceeded $7000–$8000. With rising disposable income, the importance of “spiritual wealth” increased while “material wealth” decreased, highlighting a strong correlation between wealth types and income. The bifurcation point also shifted from $8000 pre-COVID-19 to $15,000 post-outbreak.
