A chapter in Green and Blue Economy Frameworks for Halal Industry Sustainability, 2025, pp 73-88 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The blue economy and the halal industry have increasingly attracted the attention of stakeholders across the globe respectively as an exclusive body of knowledge. It therefore becomes imperative to expound on the nexus between these concepts within the larger context of Islamic economic literature for better understanding. This chapter explores the shari’ah perspective on how the relationship between these two growing sub-sectors can enhance the drive for sustainable development. The study adopts a qualitative design using a content analysis approach. In doing this, applicable verses of the Qur’an, relevant Sunnah (practice of Prophet Muhammad), and online articles are contextualized. The chapter outlines various sectors of the blue economy in the context of the halal industry and expounds on pertinent shari’ah precepts on the subject. Some key potentials for the halal sector are analyzed, pointing out the inherent strength of the sustainable development agenda. The chapter offers a new perspective to contemporary discourse on Islamic economics thereby strengthening the morale of stakeholders for necessary actions.
