Abstract:
Abstract The concept of women empowerment in India is not new. In ancient India, women held a position not only equal to men but also treated with great respect as creators, nurturers, and sources of strength. The female form, Devi, worshipped as Shakti, the source of power. However, during the Middle Ages, due to numerous invasions and cultural intermingling, the status of women declined. In recent times, efforts been made to restore women’s position to its former glory. The Constitution of India includes provisions for women empowerment. Article 14 ensures women’s equality before the law, and Article 15 empowers the State to create programs aimed at uplifting women’s status. Successful initiatives focus on education, health, start up financing, equal pay, and women's safety. As a result, women in India are now entering fields traditionally dominated by men. Women are receiving education and skill training, successfully breaking the glass ceiling and setting examples for the next generation. In the logistics and transportation sector, India boasts a higher number of women employees than the global average. Women serve as loco pilots, merchant mariners, all-women airline crews, and even all-women warehouse management teams, setting records. Despite existing challenges, the need to be optimistic toward issues that will be resolved over time. This chapter explores the true meaning of women empowerment and the measures taken in India to support women in demonstrating their capabilities and setting new benchmarks.
