Chapter Chapter 5 in Women in Logistics, Transport and Commodity Sector, 2025, pp 69-85 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The palm oil sector, a key component of the global agricultural economy, remains largely male-dominated, with women significantly underrepresented in leadership roles. This chapter explores the critical issue of gender inequality in the palm oil industry, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for enhancing women’s participation and leadership. The analysis begins with a comprehensive review of the current status of women’s roles within this sector, identifying key socio-economic and cultural barriers that hinder their advancement. Through a combination of literature review and case studies, the chapter examines the multifaceted factors contributing to these barriers, including systemic discrimination, lack of access to resources, and inadequate policy support. The discussion progresses to propose practical strategies for empowering women, emphasizing the importance of education, policy reform, and community engagement. By advocating for gender-sensitive approaches and leadership development programs, the chapter aims to promote a more inclusive and equitable industry. Furthermore, it addresses the economic implications of gender inequality, arguing that empowering women not only benefits individual livelihoods but also enhances the overall sustainability and productivity of the palm oil sector. Concluding with actionable recommendations, this chapter calls for a concerted effort from industry stakeholders, policymakers, and global communities to dismantle existing barriers and foster an environment where women can thrive as leaders. Ultimately, it underscores the essential role of gender equality in driving innovation and resilience in the palm oil industry.
