Abstract: Abstract Investing in the training and education of employees within human resource (HR) departments, particularly in the area of information technology (IT), is always valuable. This is due to two primary reasons: (a) organisations worldwide have HR-related information needs, and (b) IT issues have become increasingly critical to business sustainability. Human resource information systems (HRISs) can serve as a strategic resource and a powerful tool for decision-makers. On the contrary, they can also become a burden and lead to the wastage of both human and non-human resources within organisations. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of HRIS, including automated performance management and HR tasks, electronic HR (eHR) or technology in human resource management, and the challenges associated with HRIS technology. The aim of this chapter is to enhance researchers’ understanding of the fundamental features and characteristics crucial for the effective implementation of HRIS in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Thailand. Additionally, this chapter aims to assist practitioners in pinpointing critical issues essential for the successful deployment of HRIS. Although the chapter is narrative and descriptive rather than statistical, it contributes to a deeper understanding of HRIS patterns within organisations.
