“Green” Central Banking, from Stress Test Models to Beyond
Rodrigo Zeidan
Chapter Chapter 5 in The Green Banking Transition Manual, 2025, pp 257-328 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The final chapter explores the pivotal role of central banks in facilitating the transition to a sustainable financial system. It critically analyzes existing stress testing frameworks and their applicability in assessing climate-related risks. The author advocates for incorporating green metrics into capital adequacy assessments and the need for regulatory innovations that can catalyze rapid adaptation within financial institutions. The chapter discusses the potential for central banks to expand their mandates to include climate stability as a core objective. It also addresses the challenges posed by organizational inertia and coordination failures. The chapter illustrates how central banks can effectively contribute to a more resilient and sustainable financial ecosystem by presenting case studies on climate stress tests.
