Chapter Chapter 2 in Circular Economy Strategy for SDG Business Management, 2025, pp 17-46 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores global circular economy (CE) policies and standards shaping sustainable business models. CE principles, promoted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, emphasize resource value retention through reuse, repair, and recycling in biological and technical cycles. Key certifications, like “Cradle to Cradle Certified®,” assess products on material health and sustainability. The EU’s Ecodesign Working Plan and New Circular Economy Action Plan prioritize product lifecycle management, waste reduction, and alignment with the European Green Deal. Japan’s efforts, including the Circular Economy Vision 2020 and Advanced Resource Recycling Act (2024), promote resource efficiency and innovative circular business models. The ISO 59000 series of documents provide global standards for CE implementation and circularity measurement. Regulations like the Digital Product Passport enhance product traceability and recycling. These initiatives collectively foster environmental sustainability and economic transformation, integrating CE into global sustainable development efforts.
