Chapter Chapter 11 in Transforming Agriculture through Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Food Systems, 2025, pp 191-199 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Innovation and technologies are very crucial for encouraging sustainable food systems as it may be utilized to address some of the important issues that must be resolved in order to change the food systems and improve our understanding of global food security and nutrition. Farming is the key element for the sustainable food systems. According to Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the population will likely be increased by 2 billion by the year 2050. However, only 4% additional land will be under farming by that time. In this context, agricultural transformation through Artificial Intelligence (AI) can bring a paradigm shift in farming. From the point of technological capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI) has great promise. It also presents a new exponential approach to tackling some of the most pressing issues faced by the society. AI has its application at all stages of value chain from farming, financing, logistics, price determination and distribution to the end users and has resulted in reductions of turnaround time and consequently a reduction in their costs. The present chapter witnesses a few case studies and success stories towards use of AI in agriculture. Although AI has made some remarkable improvement in the agricultural sector, it still has a below the average impact when compared to its potential and impact in other economic sectors as farms still lack the use of hi-tech machine learning solutions.
