Chapter Chapter 10 in Between Payments and Credit, 2025, pp 177-200 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Building on the framework put forward in the previous chapter, international monetary systems of the past are presented in this chapter. This includes the gold standard (1880–1914; 1922–1936), the Bretton Woods system (1944–1971) and the European monetary system (1979–1992). Details with regard to how each monetary regime collapsed are also disseminated. Several of the policy coordination initiatives that were implemented in an attempt to avert the disintegration of each respective monetary regime are also presented via systems of financial accounts.
