Chapter Chapter 12 in Between Payments and Credit, 2025, pp 253-289 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter takes a step back from the IOU economy and credit relationships and delves into both the terminologies and technologies pertaining to the crypto-verse. To assist in the discussion, the chapter begins by first providing a lexicon of terminologies, and proceeds to explore cryptographic primitives, namely hash functions, symmetric/asymmetric encryption and digital signatures. Following this, the three major elements that together constitute blockchain technology are divulged—being the ledger, the network and the consensus mechanism. To conclude, several terminological inconsistencies as applied to the crypto-verse are discussed.
