Chapter Chapter 9 in Human Resource Management in Japan, 2025, pp 177-194 from Springer

Abstract: What you will learn in this chapter In this chapter, we explain what promotion is and why the management of promotion has been important for Japanese firms. To do so, we discuss the three key perspectives of promotion—(1) incentives, (2) skill development, and (3) job matching—drawing on influential prior research such as tournament theory and the job assignment model. Finally, we explore how changes in the business environment surrounding Japanese firms in the 2020s may influence promotion-related employment practices.
