Chapter Chapter 4 in Women's Economic Empowerment and Wellbeing, 2025, pp 49-71 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Domestic violence is a global issue that affects every country in the world, regardless of demographic profile. In most cases, an abused wife bears the brunt of the husband’s abusive behaviour; she is trapped in a marriage that is filled with disharmony and aggression, and she has no way out because she does not know what to do. Domestic violence and abuse are a social stigma for families. It is a painful experience for all involved. Wives who suffer from abuse tend to experience both emotional and financial distress. Often, they are deprived of fundamental human rights because of fear. They only live to sustain their families, with no soul of life left in them as their pains continue to fester in their marriage of hell. This chapter discusses the types of abuse involved, the factors that exacerbate abuse, and how the wives navigate their lives while struggling with abuse, and how they adhere to their commitments. The chapter gives due regard to Malaysia as a developing country as it dwells on the legal protection that is available as well as the support provided by the country to victims of domestic violence.
