Chapter Chapter 2 in Finite Element and Reduced Dimension Methods for Partial Differential Equations, 2024, pp 171-336 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract It follows from the discussion in Chap. 1 that the requirement for smoothness of the finite element (FE) space of the standard FE method is higher. Especially, the FE space of the conforming FE method of the fourth order biharmonic equation requires at least cubic interpolation, which would bring many difficulties in real-world applications.
