Chapter Chapter 15 in Health Care Management: Principles and Practice, 2024, pp 309-335 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Procurement and materials management in healthcare involve the processes of sourcing, acquiring, and managing supplies and equipment necessary for delivering medical services. This includes negotiating contracts with suppliers, maintaining inventory levels, ensuring the quality and compliance of materials, and minimizing costs while maximizing efficiency. Effective management is critical as it impacts patient care, operational efficiency, and overall healthcare costs. Healthcare procurement faces several key challenges, including: cost control, regulatory compliance, supply chain disruptions, diverse product needs, quality assurance, stakeholder alignment, technology integration, supplier relationship management, inventory management, sustainability, and ethical sourcing. Addressing these challenges involves strategic planning, robust process management, collaboration across departments, and leveraging technology to improve efficiency and transparency. Medical procurement goes beyond basic contracts and should address user needs, technical maintenance, and training. The evaluation of medical technology procurement is a proposed decision-making tool for improving procurement processes. Effective hospital materials management is key for controlling rising healthcare costs. Recent studies have highlighted areas for improvement in material management and identified barriers to implementing better supply chain practices. Risk management and resilience have become central components of healthcare procurement strategies amid changing market demands. Healthcare organizations can optimize their supply chain performance through several strategies: Implementing technology solutions, enhancing collaboration, adopting lean principles, improving demand forecasting, strengthening supplier relationships, training and development, risk management strategies, sustainability practices, continuous improvement, and performance metrics. By focusing on these strategies, healthcare organizations can enhance their supply chain efficiency, reduce costs, and ultimately improve patient care outcomes.
