Chapter Chapter 7 in Health Care Management: Principles and Practice, 2024, pp 147-155 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Healthcare needs assessment serves the purpose of gathering essential information to drive positive changes in population health. It systematically reviews health issues, identifies unmet healthcare needs, and recommends interventions. By understanding the capacity for benefit from healthcare, addressing deficits, and involving non-health agencies, it contributes to better health outcomes. Healthcare needs assessment is an evaluative process that quantifies population health requirements. It focuses on identifying gaps in services and understanding inequalities in health needs and access. Need is defined as the capacity to benefit from healthcare, arising from deficits in health that can be addressed through effective interventions. Assessments inform changes to existing services, guide business cases, and influence service commissioning.
