Chapter Chapter 1 in 10 Ways to Invest, 2024, pp 1-22 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Owning a maximally diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds through minimally expensive financial intermediaries is a way of investing that has only become possible within these past few decades, not only for large professional investors, but also for smaller individual savers. Advocates of these “passive” investment funds point to the reasons and evidence of these funds outperforming most higher-cost “active” funds over time, especially in terms of “return on effort” for the end investor. Critics of this approach may point to how these funds depend on the history of stocks and bonds becoming more accessible, and especially of the coincidence of how index funds developed over a relative golden age of stock and bond returns, especially in the United States.
