Chapter Chapter 13 in Technological Revolution and New Driving Forces for Global Sustainable Development, 2024, pp 89-96 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The opportunities and challenges in building a digitally advanced and sustainable society are the main topics of the speech. Success can no longer be defined only in economic terms, and so the concept of sustainability has emerged, implying a balanced articulation between three pillars: environment, economy, and society, all supported by good governance. Many actions, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG), have been implemented, but there is a shortage of a strong theoretical basis and a common concept of sustainability. The world is in the midst of a technological revolution, with new technologies emerging, while the most enabling force or driver of digital transformation may be artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies form a digital ecosystem and drive digital transformation. Do opportunities to achieve SDGs increase or decrease in the digital age? According to research, digital transformation can benefit health, quality education, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. However, it also has limitations, including entailing conflicts of interest among private organizations, public institutions, activists, and citizens, data issues, ethical dilemmas, and environmental challenges. However, there are roadmaps to coordinate sustainability and digital transformation efficiently. Policy should be leveraged to encourage more empirical research to quantify the impact of digital transformation, unbundle the digital ecosystem, study the opinion and collective sentiments about digital transformation, and learn the interrelationship between institutional quality, digital transformation, public opinion, and the achievement of the SDGs. This speech also presents some studies conducted by Stefano Bianchini and his team on digital transformation and sustainability, with the aim of providing insights for future research. In conclusion, the digital age offers opportunities and also involves challenges. With great power comes great responsibility, and the research community and society must shoulder this responsibility.
