A chapter in Agripreneurship and the Dynamic Agribusiness Value Chain, 2024, pp 117-132 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the potential for unlocking business opportunities for village agribusinesses within the global value chain (GVC) framework, contributing to sustainable rural development. Utilizing a narrative review methodology, the study examines 36 selected articles and institutional publications to identify key findings and insights. The first finding highlights that the integration of village-owned agribusinesses (VOAs) into GVCs varies significantly by region, crop type, and economic conditions. The second finding identifies critical barriers to this integration, including strict market standards, certification requirements, financial constraints, technological gaps, and inadequate government support. Conversely, key facilitators include inclusive business models, supportive government policies, partnerships, favorable trade policies, financial incentives, and infrastructure development, which collectively enhance market access and mitigate barriers. The third finding showcases several successful models of VOAs that have effectively integrated into GVCs. Notable examples include Indonesia’s Margamulya Coffee Cooperative (MCPC), India’s Amul dairy cooperative, Kenya’s insect farming agribusinesses, the contract farming model for sugarcane in Uganda and Tanzania, and India’s ITC e-Choupal initiative. These models emphasize the importance of quality control, strong partnerships, and leveraging technology and sustainability practices. The chapter discusses the practical implications of these findings for policy and societal advancement, addressing the limitations of current approaches and suggesting directions for future research. This comprehensive analysis aims to provide valuable insights and best practices to enhance the integration of village agribusinesses into global markets, ultimately driving sustainable rural development.
