Chapter Chapter 2 in Multi-Regional Input–Output Analysis of the Japanese Economy, 2024, pp 13-33 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Chapter 2 provides an overview of the structure of Japan’s IOTs, discusses the positioning of prefectural IOTs, and outlines the estimation methods for regional IOTs. The structure of Japan’s regional IOTs has four layers including national IOT: regional IOTs of the METI below the national IOT, prefectural IOTs below them, and municipal IOTs further below. However, since the METI stopped creating their regional IOTs after the 2005 table, currently it is reduced to three-tiered structures, including the national table. We give an overview of how to construct the IOTs, both national and regional. Each prefecture creates independently its own IOT using information from the same year’s national IOT, then no guarantee can be offered that its aggregated values will match the corresponding values of the national IOT.
