Gender Discrimination and Population Change

Wei-Bin Zhang

Chapter Chapter 11 in An Economic Theory of Gender and Population Change, 2024, pp 191-206 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter, Gender Discrimination and Population Change, deals with dynamic interactions between wealth accumulation and population dynamics with birth rate, mortality rate, and gender discrimination against women. Through introducing gender discrimination against women in labor markets I examine the role of discrimination in time distribution and population dynamics. It is organized as follows. Section 11.1 develops the growth model with gender discrimination. Section 11.2 studies the dynamic properties of the model. Section 11.3 shows how the economy reacts when the discrimination rate against women rises. Section 11.4 follows the path of the system when a woman’s human capital is improved. Section 11.5 shows how the economy is changed when the propensity to save is increased. Section 11.6 shows the impact of a rise in the woman’s propensity to enjoy leisure. Section 11.7 analyzes the effects of an increase in the propensity to have children. Section 11.8 plots the motion of the system when the father spends more time on each child fostering. Section 11.9 follows the change in the system when the total factor productivity is enhanced.
